Likeminds: 6 out of 10; good day, but only a few new top tips to take away
Likeminds was good. The morning was particularly good and I thought that Jonathan Akwue and John Bell were excellent. But, unfortunately, it didn’t wow me as I’d hoped.
Whether I went with the wrong expectations or not I don’t know. It could be because as an immature social media teenager I was seeking answers to specific problems. Certainly one person I talked to, that went expressly to learn as a beginner – and his business could really make use of social media – agreed with me. Whilst it opened his mind, a lot of the content of the day was too much about social media for the sake of social media. Maybe social media beginners need to do as few training sessions before being going to Likeminds.
Now, at a convention, seminar or workshop the nature of the content is always going to be a little close to navel gazing. But there was a lot of talk – especially in the afternoon – that was very close to being in a room full of enthusiasts, zealots even, who forget about the outside world. It was entertaining, but needed a pinch of salt for my appetite. Indeed, the nervous clients I deal with and that I am sure other people need to convert, would have been growing very restless indeed. I have to admit to being close to despair during the exchange about bloggers and journalists (after all I write a blog, edit a magazine, do freelance journalism and PR).
So, out of ten, from my perspective I’d give it a score of six. I’d like to thank Chris Hall for getting me along and a special mention goes to Benjamin “it’s like the web all over again, wash, rinse and repeat” Ellis, John Bell (excellent), Jonathan Akwue and AJ Pape for their respective ideas, energy and enthusiasm.
But, the day did confirm some ideas in my head and gave me some excellent insights and ideas to share with clients – although not many of them felt very new. I’m going to list them in a second blog later this week. By all means contact me about this – I am a convert, but I guess taking it slow. Watch this space to track how my faith grows as a I get religion.
